These exciting positions have been created as part of a collaborative venture within the well-established UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme. The positions are intended to:
• Map current product engineering processes.
• Identify process bottlenecks and provide/implement computer aided solutions to specific company casting design, analytical engineering and knowledge capture tasks.
• Improve downstream manufacturing by mapping mould design/manufacture/analysis methods.
• Identify computer aided manufacturing solutions and implement a strategy for integration/knowledge capture with upstream processes.
Both positions are located at Balfour Beatty Rail Ltd, South Queensferry near Edinburgh. Balfour Beatty Rail Ltd undertakes both the remodelling and upgrading of existing rail infrastructure and the construction of new systems.
Specifically, the first post will involve value stream mapping (VSM) on casting, analysis and lifecycle management, together with specification of potential CAE solutions. The post will also involve evaluation, implementation and scheduling, and planning for management of change. The second post will involve VSM on mould production and manufacture including technologies used at each stage, resulting in recommendations for potential CAD/CAM solutions. Both posts will involve the specification for a potential CAE solution within the company’s existing lean manufacturing environment. This will lead to an evaluation of costing and the impact to mould and casting production workflow that will be presented to BB Rail management.

Skills required: A minimum of 3 months or equivalent in a product design and manufacturing environment involving design, analysis, CAD and product lifecycle management is also desirable.
Candidates should be team workers, self-starters and with good interpersonal and communication skills. Additionally experience in engineering design, statistics, software or other relevant domains, and an awareness of modern hardware systems would be beneficial.
